Seward, Alaska
I visited Ava’s today and enjoyed photographing RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS at her sugar water feeder about 10’ away. The male was banded; I could only read 343 on the minute silver ring around his ankle. He was very coy and mostly fed on the opposite side of the feeder, giving me unsatisfactory peeks of the tip of his tail. And then, he hovered in front!
The female was more cooperative and fed ravenously in view. A slender thread of moss or lichen trailed behind, caught in her feathers. Possibly a second female trailed what looked to be a length of spider web. The moms must have been incubating the eggs in their marvelous nests and zipped out for a quick sugar hit.
Other yard birds included: DOWNY and HAIRY WOODPECKERS, PINE SISKIN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, FOX SPARROWS, STELLER’S JAY, and SNIPE winnowing overhead.
Ava welcomes quiet birders, but please stay outside the fishing net fence. Turn onto Nash Road, take the first left onto Salmon Creek Road, drive across the bridge and take an immediate right onto her long driveway. Hers is the second house, with a blue roof and cedar siding. Donations for the year-round birdseed are greatly appreciated.
