Friday, April 6, 2018 Horned Lark!

Seward, Alaska
Cloudy and calm, 23º

A one-shot wonder turned up today in the company of 16 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. The group chittered as they walked quickly through the dried beach rye grass, sometimes taking short flight hops to be at the head of the roving flock.

As I tried to stealthily get better views and photos, I noticed one bird had a very distinct black and white facemask. A HORNED LARK! Up and down, over and through he dashed. When at last camera met bird, it had just caught a spider to eat! Invertebrates like this spider are a welcome source of protein; a prize hiding in the grass.

Shortly after spotting the Horned Lark, a NORTHERN SHRIKE
flew over and landed at the top of an elderberry shoot, possibly considering the menu and bird du jour. Hope it was not the lark!

Happy Birding!
