Crews labor to save Lowell Point Bridge

Seward, Alaska

Thanks to the hard-working crews from City of Seward Public Works and Metco!

What a race against the forces of Nature to save the Lowell Point Road bridge by constantly clearing the Lowell Creek waterfall basin and the channel to the tideline. Public Works reported that water flowing out of the tunnel reached as high as 400 cubic feet per second!

A short walk up Lowell Canyon revealed a thundering, brown, swollen creek full of sediment, gravel, debris, and boulders roaring into the tunnel mouth. Another waterfall cascaded down the Mt Marathon Race Trail.

Expect more rain overnight and tomorrow as a series of storms hits Seward.
