Saturday, October 13, 2018 flooding

Seward, Alaska

Heavy rain continued all night. By morning, the accumulated load on the mountainsides swelled dark brown creeks and rivers with silt, soil, gravel, rocks, and boulders.

The Resurrection River flowed over the beleaguered and oft-patched long runway, depositing stumps and rocks. Clouds of GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS scavenged in the sodden grass and on the runway, perhaps feasting on homeless worms and other invertebrates.

Japanese Creek tore a ravine into Dieckgraeff Road, closing access to the Borough Transfer Facility.

The Diversion Tunnel Waterfall (aka Lowell Creek) raged over the cliff, filling the basin below, almost touching the Lowell Point Road bridge as it rumbled underneath and out to a discolored Resurrection Bay.

Thankfully, the wind died and a break in the rain this afternoon will help flush out the load. More heavy rain is forecast for Monday.
