Tuesday, February 19, 2019 Snow Streamers and a Thayer’s Gull

Seward, Alaska
As forecast, the sun shone mightily today, raising the temp to 36º. That illusionary warmth barely registered even when sheltered from the fierce north wind. The wind, with gusts to 35 mph, blasted snow off surrounding mountaintops in impressive streamers and whirls. Resurrection Bay in turn raged with whitecaps, their curling tops whisked away. Quite an exciting day!
Hunkered down at the Uplands south of the boat harbor, I found a continuing THAYER’S GULL with a  GLAUCOUS-WINGED X HERRING GULL hybrid, and a smattering of GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS, hopeful for handouts. Nearby, NORTHWESTERN CROWS picked through the crusty snow for crumbs under the wary, watchful eye of an iridescent RAVEN.
The delightful, bright sunshine inspired me to create striking black and white photos. Don't blow away!
Happy Birding!
