Seward, Alaska
The TUFTED and HORNED PUFFINS
at the Alaska Sealife Center are in the process of molting, and are very busy preening. The handsome tufts
on all the Tufted Puffins are gone, as are the colorful “horns” of their
cousins. Their colorful beak plates are still mostly attached, but barely. It
looked like one flick of a toe could lift them off and away.
I will have to return soon to
see what they look like in total winter plumage. Very different, I’m sure, but still very cute!
Happy Birding!
